City Strengthens Collaboration on Independent Area Waste Management

The Jakarta Environmental Agency collaborates with waste transportation operators and licensed waste management businesses to support the implementation of Governor Regulation No. 102/2021 on Waste Management Obligations in Areas and Companies.

Government can more easily oversee and take action against illegal dumping practices

Jakarta Environmental Agency Head, Asep Kuswanto emphasizes the importance of cross-sector collaboration to reduce the waste load entering Bantargebang Landfill.

"Each area manager and company is required to independently sort, collect, transport, and process waste, or collaborate with authorized waste transport and management service providers," he expressed, Wednesday (8/20).

He explained, Gubernatorial Regulation No. 102/2021 mandates residential, commercial, and industrial areas, as well as companies with AMDAL or UKL/UPL documents, to develop an integrated waste management system.

The mechanism includes waste identification, sorting by type, waste reuse, and routine reporting through the PESAPA KAWAN platform.

He explained that this platform becomes the official information system of the Environmental Agency to record the volume of waste processed, types of waste, transporter identity, and waste disposal destinations.

"With transparent data, the Jakarta Government can more easily oversee and take action against illegal dumping practices," he explained.

Previously, his agency invited waste transportation business actors and licensed waste management business actors on Tuesday (8/19).

In the meeting, the Environmental Agency also discussed strategies to improve waste management performance, starting from data collection of waste processing locations owned by business actors, verification of operational legality, to efforts to prevent pollution at processing sites.

He emphasized that supervision will be strengthened for areas and companies that have not partnered with official service providers.

"We aim for the implementation of this regulation to not only reduce the volume of waste disposed of in Bantargebang Landfill but also to promote a paradigm shift that waste is no longer just refuse, but a resource that can be managed," he stated.
